How the Hands Move in Mechanical Coordination

In real clock movements, the hour hand does not wait until the top of the hour to jump to the next digit. Instead, it is connected to the minute wheel via a 12:1 reduction gear train. As the minute hand completes one full 360-degree rotation (60 minutes), the hour hand progresses exactly 30 degrees (one twelfth of the dial).

Use the +15m and +1m steppers above to observe how the short hour hand subtly creeps across the space between numerals. Notice that at 1:50, the hour hand is almost directly touching the 2, yet the hour remains 1 until the minute hand crosses the 12.
