How to Build a Tactile Cardboard Clock Manipulative
Research in early childhood mathematics shows that physically turning hands with fingers builds spatial intuition faster than passive flashcards. Follow these three steps to build an indestructible teaching clock:
- Print on Heavy Stock: Select the “1 Large” layout with “Cut-Out Hands Strip” enabled. Print on 65lb or 110lb cardstock paper.
- Cut and Punch: Cut out the dial circle and the separate hour and minute hands using child-safe scissors. Use a pushpin or hole punch to pierce the center circles marked on the hands and dial.
- Fasten with a Split Pin: Thread a round-head brass fastener (split pin / brad) through the minute hand first, then the hour hand, and finally through the dial center. Spread the wings on the back loosely so the hands rotate freely.
