Why the Roman Face Uses IIII Instead of IV
One of the most frequent questions from watchmakers and historians is why classical Roman clock faces display IIII instead of IV for four o'clock. This practice dates back to 14th-century horology:
- Optical Symmetry: On a circular dial divided into thirds, the numerals using only "I" (I, II, III, IIII) create a balanced sequence on the first four hours, balancing the heavier numerals on the opposite side of the circle (V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII).
